Mrs. Patti Jackson « Teacher Connection

Hooray! The students have survived their first substitute of the year. I was gone the last half of the week for my son’s wedding. Even though I have only known your children for a brief time, I really missed them all. They did very well and I had great comments waiting for me. Our Reading Celebration is this Friday morning. You are welcome to join us at 8:30 in the middle school gym.

If you did not yet sign and return the weekly take home folder, please do that as soon as possible. The folders will go home each Tuesday. This week I will send the folders home on Wednesday. I need time to check the work done while I was gone. Please review the graded work, sign the comment page and return the folder to school. I will attach a note to work I want you to see and return. Please keep all other work at home.

I’ve had some questions about spelling. We are currently doing homework for all 15 words. The students are tested on the first 10 words with the last 5 words counting for bonus points. As the year progresses, we will add more required words to the test. Some students may also have an alternate challenge list. Directions for the different spelling assignments are posted on the web site. Last week’s substitute was confused about Wednesday’s assignment and replaced the work with ABC order. We will add that assignment later in the year after working with alphabetical order.

General FYI: Each Friday, I have my students fill out their planners for the coming week. That way you have a head start on spelling. I hope knowing work in advance will let you work around family schedules. You can expect students to have 10 to 15 minutes of homework. I also encourage students to read at least 10 minutes each night. Please see the section below for more information and ideas for reading. You can find a list and descriptions as needed on the calendar below this message. I post all the week’s homework on Mondays. You will find the spelling, vocabulary, and high frequency words there as well. This week students will begin each spelling assignment here at school. This will help you learn what each assignment requires including the proper heading for papers.

I will send a take home folder home each Tuesday. This folder will include the previous week’s tests and graded work. I will also use this folder to send home important communications, fliers, and notices.

Reading together:  Don’t forget that reading improves with practice. Students are expected to read each night for at least 10 minutes. Please record your child’s time in the chart in the upper right corner of the planner page. Read together with your child, read to your child, or listen to your child read to you. All these things count for the daily reading minutes. Please guide your child to complete daily homework with quality and to show pride in all work done. Remind them that everything they do is a chance to “brag” and “show what you know!”
